Seeing Myself Through Your Prism

So I saw Chuck Klosterman speak yesterday which basically made my year. He is one of my favorite authors (if not my favorite) and he gave a great, and not short speech. One of the most exciting things was, that he put into words an idea that I’ve been trying to get across for ages, I could just never really word it right. If you remember my post from a while ago, about how it’s impossible to objectively tell how good a party (or anything) is when hearing it from other people, then you might know where this is going. Basically the idea is, that critique is autobiography. You learn more about the person evaluating than you do about the thing they are critiquing. So when you tell me a movie sucked, it means nothing to me, because you are injecting it with completely different ideas/expereiences than I will, making for an entirely different experience. There is pretty much no real possibility for objective criticism of cultural items, and no use for subjective criticism. You just have to experience stuff for yourself. Side note.. I didn’t have any books for him to sign afterwards, so I got him to sign the inside of my cellphone…making my phone waaaay cooler than yours will ever be.

Instead of saying you made 100 “dollars”, it is much cooler to say you made 100 “large”.

By the way, don’t steal the title of this post, I’ve already written a song called that, so don’t get sneaky.

Contemplating why there were so many clouds with so little rain… (and realizing I forgot my electric razor)
