Music Month - Day 5

Today was not the website construction marathon it was supposed to be. I have to admit, going out hard the night before is not the best way to get motivated to write HTML code all the next day. I would say today was sort of a little break, which I think is OK. This self-imposed, disciplined schedule is all very new to me and is taking some getting used to, so if today was a little laid back I’m OK with that.

It wasn’t a complete day off though. I spent a fair amount of the afternoon working on recording techniques in Logic and was able to get a really good acoustic guitar channel setting. I was trying to make my guitar sound exactly like the acoustic guitars on Alexi Murdoch’s “Time Without Consequence” album. I was playing around with reverbs, EQs, compressors, filters, forever until I got something I was happy with. Once I added some upright bass and little string swells here and there, it sounded pretty fantastic. (bass and strings are obviously MIDI)

Tomorrow my friend Phil is coming over to record one of his songs which should be really fun. I was watching “Once” for the second time the other day and realized how much I miss the recording process. I do it a lot alone, in my room, but there is nothing better than a group recording session that takes up the day. The actual ‘music’ part is OK, but the hanging out and just overall vibe of a recording session is one of my favorite things in the world. That should be good practice for me before I dive into my own EP recording sessions. My roommate Mike is going to be taking some pictures tomorrow during the session, so I should be able to put up a couple shots from the shoot tomorrow night.

Next weekend I’ll be in Sundance, so the website construction might have to be moved in during the writing week. I think, based on last week’s schedule, that I should be able to find time.

I am also going to start taking Japanese language classes once a week. I find myself very intimidated with Tokyo as a non-Japanese speaker. I think it would be really great to have some knowledge of the language before I go, and this three month program I found sounds perfect. I give up on Spanish. I’ve forgotten most of it anyway, which is really frustrating because I was almost fluent at one point. Oh well. Japan here I come!

San Francisco at night, without the requisite tripod.
